MEET PAULA JOUBERT FROM ANLA CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY
Brides can’t meet every photographer they research in person, so the only way to know whether they will get along with someone is by getting to know more about them on a personal level. The master creator behind Anla Creative Photography, Paula, shares why she may be the perfect photographer for your most important day.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?
“My mother was an amateur photographer and I reckon that I get my love for the craft from her. I was eight years old when I took my first important photo – it was of my mother, father, and sister at our family picnic. This picture was so striking and special that my mother printed and framed it, and it still hangs on her wall.
Today I have a diploma in Professional Photography and completed various international courses on Wedding Photography, one of which were under the masterful mentorship of Jerry Ghionis.”
HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR A BRIDE TO HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH HER PHOTOGRAPHER?
“A photographer is someone in the innermost circle of a couple’s wedding, so it is crucial for photographers to establish a good relationship with their clients. I build good relationships with all my clients, and it all starts at the engagement shoot, where we spend time together and get to know each other. It is so important to me that I include it in all my packages.
I keep in touch with all my clients, and they invite me on their love journey – from the wedding to their newborn and family photoshoots. This is such a blessing to me to be able to experience it with them.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE WEDDING VENUES?
“I absolutely love the whimsical feel of a forest, so I would say that it is definitely my favorite. I do love all kinds of venues though, so I do not prefer the one over the other.”
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON MISTAKES BRIDES MAKE?
“Personally, it stifles my creativity a bit when couples show me photos and then want me to replicate them to a tee. Sometimes the requests aren’t realistic either, because if they are looking at a certain sunset photo, and it rains on their wedding day, they can be very disappointed. There are so many variables at play here.
Sometimes brides feel like they should look like miss South Africa in their photos, but then they don’t. There is no such thing as an ugly bride, let me just add, but brides should be realistic and embrace their own unique beauty on the day.”
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR BRIDES?
“Weddings are wonderful, but they are also stressful. My advice would be for brides to just relax a bit and not set the bar of their expectations so high, that they get disappointed when things don’t go exactly according to plan. The event is arranged and executed by mere humans, and mistakes tend to creep in. Things like the weather cannot be controlled, and brides would benefit hugely from keeping in mind that things may turn out differently than what they envisioned.”
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER?
“Just to be behind the camera! I am a romantic at heart and I just love telling a couple’s love story through the photos I take. I always tell my brides on their last interview that I want to tell their story in such a way that they can sit on their front porch far into the future, looking at their pictures and feeling like they are getting married all over again.”
Paula doesn’t only photograph weddings, but also takes the couple on a journey back in time when they look at their pictures.
